The Story

Kīlauea Lava Rising is part of a two-painting watercolor series I created after returning from Hawaiʻi, where I participated in the Lavaman relay and swam approximately one mile in the ocean.

During the trip, Kīlauea was erupting dramatically, with lava fountains shooting an estimated 700–900 feet into the air and producing Pele’s hair—delicate strands of volcanic glass carried from the eruption.

Experiencing Hawaiʻi when the landscape felt so alive stayed with me. This painting captures some of that energy: brilliant reds, oranges, and gold rising from the dark volcanic earth beneath an expansive blue sky.

The trip brought together so much of what inspires my artwork—adventure, movement, water, and the extraordinary power of the natural world.

Created in April 2026, Kīlauea Lava Rising is a one-of-a-kind original watercolor, signed by the artist and presented in an 11" × 14" mat.
